Before I was 13, I had already installed a linux distribution on my parent’s home computer (Mandriva Linux) because it was on one of those old demo cds that you got from the ISP and I finished playing all the demo games. It went all down hill from there.
After high school I decided that an office job was not for me and I studied performing arts techology. This is the “technical” aspects of performing arts such as costume design, makeup, sound design, lighting design and carrying heavy things. Working in a theatre, or any production stage, means you gain a healthy respect for safety but still getting things done. You also learn how to make a plan, quickly. Unfortunately, the field does not pay that well and carrying heavy things late at night loses its charm quicker than you might expect.
Deciding to study again, I went back to my roots and completed the first year of a BSc Computer Science degree. During this year I discovered a passion for mathematics that high school mathematics failed to spark, and I switched degrees in my second year to BSc Applied Mathematics. I completed the degree and went on to study my honours. Unfortunately, COVID hit and while I completed the coursework, I was unable to complete the research assignment and hand to find work to help support my family during this time.
Since then I’ve been working as what I would describe a “start-up generalist”. Initially employed as a computational scientist to support and extend a state estimation system, I completed projects that ranged from that to data analysis and data science, to data engineering and DBA, to backend development and DevOps.
I am now cutting my teeth on Systems Architecture and Design, by working as a prototype developer servicing small teams and startups. My goal is to spend more time doing R&D work and build interesting things.
If you have a project on which you think I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me.
